Tom Herbert

Structural Engineer MEng (Hons)

Tom joined SWJ in 2019 after completing a master’s degree in Civil Engineering and Spanish at the University of Sheffield, having spent two summers on work experience with Rhys, Russell and Sam over the course of his study, both at SWJ and at a previous company. Tom says “one of the best things about working for SWJ is how close the team is, making SWJ a friendly environment to work in. It’s great to come into work and not have to put on a facade as management are so relaxed and I can really be myself”

As a relatively new arrival to the industry, Tom is looking forward to developing his engineering judgement and skills, with the aim of working towards membership, and ultimately chartership within a professional body such as IStructE or ICE. “My aim this year is to continue developing my knowledge and experience on a variety of construction techniques and different scaled projects. SWJ arranges at least 2 CPD’s per month and these are such a great way to broaden my knowledge.”

“No day is ever the same,” says Tom. “As we all work closely with the Directors we get to work on a variety of differently-sized projects, anything from a residential extension to multi-storey apartment complexes.” SWJ make sure all employees have the opportunity to be client-facing as this is great for their experience and to work alongside contractors, site managers, architects and end clients.

We offer our employees flexible working hours as we know everyone has a life outside of work, Tom mentioned: “SWJ understands the importance of work-life balance, there is no stress if, for personal reasons you are unable to make it in on time, everyone is aware of their working hours so we make the time up where needed.”

SWJ is always looking to expand the team and we make our employees aware of the growth within the business “the directors are always talking about expanding the team which is great to hear as when working for larger businesses you don’t always hear about the growth of each team and that the company is excelling.”
