Glass isn’t structural
One of the biggest misconceptions is that because modern glazing systems are incredibly strong, they can replace the structural role of walls.
In reality, the glass itself generally supports very little of the building above. Traditional masonry walls carry the weight of roofs, upper floors and wind loads directly down into the foundations. Once those walls are replaced with glass, those forces must be redirected through another structural system.
This often means introducing carefully designed steel frames, reinforced concrete elements or engineered timber structures that are discreetly integrated into the architecture.
The challenge for structural engineers is achieving this without compromising the clean, minimalist appearance that clients are trying to achieve.
Maintaining lateral stability in continuous glazed areas
One of the most important roles of a structural engineer is maintaining the building’s lateral stability—its ability to resist wind loads and prevent excessive movement. Steel frames make modern architecture possible
Large glazed elevations almost always rely on steel. Steel provides exceptional strength while occupying relatively little space, allowing engineers to create long spans and large openings that would be impossible using traditional masonry alone.
