SWJ Consulting (Skym, Wrapson and Johnston) is an award-winning, Oxfordshire based, forward-thinking practice that combines virtual design and construction technology with practical experience and expertise. We have a growing reputation for excellence and are looking to expand our team.

We’re recruiting

The current size of the company means it’s a great time for any ambitious engineer or graduate to looking to progress their career to management level. Regardless of your starting point SWJ are keen to ensure all team members have access and input to interesting and challenging projects, the nature of which are increasingly diverse. Take a look at our projects.

Our location also offers the best of both worlds, right on the edge of the Cotswolds but only an hour to London or Birmingham. The A34 crosses the M40 and M4 offering easy access to most major motorways. The office is located on a bus route that runs from Oxford every 10-15 minutes in the opposite direction to rush hour traffic and new and affordable homes are being built in the surrounding areas.

What we’re looking for

Beyond what we detail in specific job descriptions we are looking for people to join our team who will be a good fit professionally and personally. Ideally, you’ll have the confidence to debate and present logical arguments, rise to a challenge but concede that there may be differences of opinion.

We are looking for problem solvers who aren’t afraid to try something new or try to find a solution for yourself. Virtual design and construction technology is at the core of our culture and so you’ll need to be computer literate and willing to explore new technology.

Clear communication is vital both verbal, written and with sketches. We need to be able to understand your ideas and solutions and be confident you can communicate well to clients and on site. Beyond that we want to recruit team members that will support each other, and communication is vital to this.

No experience at all?

Don’t worry if you’re a school leaver looking to get started in this industry. We are looking for attitude and aptitude over experience. If you have 5 GCSE’s (C or 4 and above), and A-levels, NVQ or diploma equivalent we’d be interested to speak to you about an apprenticeship; supporting you through industry courses to become a technician or engineer.

How our recruitment process works

1. Applications with covering letters

We want to know about you as a person beyond your experience (or lack of). We’re recruiting for a team and have clearly identified values, so we want to know what you’re looking for and why you’re getting in touch with us. Feel free to send us your CV with a covering letter anytime to rhys.skym@swjconsulting.co.uk

2. Short list and telephone interview (covering 10 standard questions)

A telephone interview that asks some standard questions allows us to short list candidates effectively. It will also give you the chance to ask any make or break questions, so we can both decide whether to proceed.

3. Formal interview (includes some practical challenges/tests)

Our formal interviews are in review at the moment, but you will have the chance to speak to all three of the directors who will challenge your thinking. You will be well prepared for this interview to ensure we all get the best from it.

4. DiSC (personality profile)

Understanding how your personality and natural behaviour tendencies is important for ensuring you will be the right fit for the team, as well as giving us all insight into what you need to be productive and successful in your role.

5. Second interview (if necessary)

A chance for both parties to ask any additional questions if necessary and possibly discuss DiSC profile results.

6. Decision

Whatever the outcome this will come to you in writing within a week of the second interview process closing. We are happy to give feedback to unsuccessful applicants should they wish us to.

7. References

Once a decision has been made we will contact your references.

Comments from SWJ’s employees

 Tom Herbert

Structural Engineer MEng (Hons)

“No day is ever the same. As we all work closely with the Directors we get to work on a variety of differently-sized projects, anything from a residential extension to multi-storey apartment complexes.”

Poonam Lad

Structural Engineering Technician

‘I decided that I wanted a more work-based learning approach to engineering than university offered and although I love being a technician I have been looking at the option of becoming a structural engineer – SWJ allows me to keep my options open until I am decided.’

SWJ Team

Charlotte Martin

Office Manager

‘Working for SWJ has given me the opportunity to learn a variety of disiplines, one of them being a better understanding on marketing by working with an external marketing company and attending various networking events. SWJ is a flexible and friendly company to work for resulting in us having a good work-life balance.’

Tess Brooker

Assistant to the Directors

‘The best thing about working for SWJ for me is the flexibility it gives me. I work from home, which is perfect as I have twin daughters, one of whom has special needs.’
