Structural Technician
Poonam left a large multidisciplinary engineering firm to join SWJ in 2018 after her apprenticeship was discontinued.
As part of her employment, it was agreed she could continue her career progression by choosing a more suitable course with a whole day allowance in the working week to pursue this. This has proved more beneficial to Poonam as she found out that learning through the practical application of engineering suited her learning style much better than sitting in a classroom.
She completed her first year of a Civil Engineering degree in 2010, the current course she is on will give her the correct requirements to finish her degree and qualify for an IStructE Technician membership.
“There was a lot of pressure to go straight to University after completing my A-Levels and in my first year, I became disheartened with Engineering. Working with SWJ has taught me a lot about my learning style and it has been such a confidence boost to find out that I can be a successful Engineering Technician and work towards being a Structural Engineer at my own pace within a team that fully support my growth and development.”
