Edward Jones is currently studying Civil Engineering at the University of Southampton and has been with us for 4 weeks for a work experience placement during the summer break to help with his studies at university.

During Edward’s time at SWJ, he’s enjoyed applying and building upon the theory which he has learnt over the course of his first year at the University of Southampton. Whilst working for SWJ Edward has gained valuable insight into the reality of day-to-day challenges working as a structural engineer.

As SWJ is a technology driven structural engineering consultancy it has been a great opportunity for Edward to improve and develop practical skills, such as using specialist software like Autodesk Revit and Tekla Structures, which we hope will help him for future studies and throughout his engineering career.

So far, Edward has worked on a small housing project, performing a load takedown of the structure, carried out lintel calculations and modelled wall panels. Alongside this, he has been carrying out beam calculations and finalising sheets for clients using Revit.

“Everyone in the office has been incredibly helpful and offered advice when needed. This along with the cheerful and positive atmosphere around the office has led me to thoroughly enjoy my time here at SWJ”

The team at SWJ would like to wish Edward the best of luck on the rest of his studies.
