Project Description

Precision Engineering for Cedar Vets: Elevating Medical Facilities

Cedar Vets, a reputable veterinary practice with locations across Hampshire, embarked on expanding their services across the region. Acquiring a concrete-framed office building, featuring a pre-cast concrete first floor and a steel frame above, they looked to create an advanced veterinary hub. This space would house essential elements, including CT and MRI scanners, office areas, consulting rooms, and kennels. Further, the project entailed an extension to the existing glass entrance, a porchway, and an external plant room designated for the safe storage of Oxygen tanks. SWJ’s objective was to assess the structure’s viability and devise the necessary design modifications.

A pivotal aspect of this transformation was the creation of an external plant room for Oxygen tank storage. This measure addressed fire safety concerns, aligning with the cautious approach required due to the presence of enriched oxygen and flammable substances in veterinary practices.

The intricacies of integrating MRI and CT scanners necessitated meticulous consideration. Factors included the spatial demands for housing the equipment and facilitating movement, strategic positioning around the existing support columns, and the integration of lead shielding to ensure comprehensive radiation protection. These technical nuances were carefully woven into the design, reflecting our dedication to precision.

The structural implications extended beyond equipment operation, factoring in weight distribution during transportation and installation. Assessments of corridor and mounting area capacities were conducted, ensuring they could withstand added point loads. A practical solution involved introducing spreader plates in corridors, facilitating secure equipment transportation on trolleys.

Our collaboration with Cedar Vets stands as a testament to our ongoing collaborations within the medical and veterinary domain and we look forward to writing about our next veterinary development shortly.
