SWJ Consulting is a relatively new Structural Engineering consultancy, based in Witney, Oxfordshire. We have a wealth of experience, credentials and progressive technical capabilities. Our case studies are a testament to our ability to complete large projects but if you have not heard of us before or not found us through recommendation you may have concerns. As mentioned SWJ Consulting is a newish company, just three years old. So, we are still establishing and building our reputation. All three directors, Rhys Skym, Russell Wrapson and Sam Johnston, worked at Gemma Design for many years, which has since closed its doors. Gemma Design was well known and respected and Rhys, our Managing Director, was also one of the directors of that business.
In its first two years of trading, SWJ were finalists in several local business awards and were grand finalists in the LABC Building Excellence Awards, 2018. We have worked hard to evidence our success publicly and are active members of the Construction Excellence Networks.
We are more than happy to put you in touch with clients, architects and/or contractors we have worked with on all sizes of project. Our extensive range of projects includes new builds and self builds, basements, swimming pools, high-rise mixed-use developments, affordable and social housing, commercial, education, listed buildings and motor dealerships. The competence of SWJ as a consultancy is borne out by its directors. Rhys, our Managing Director is a Chartered Member of IStructE and an IStructE Assessor. His reputation in the industry is building and he is well known and respected locally. Russell is a technician member (TIStructE) of the ISTructE and Sam Johnston (being the younger of the three) is working towards Chartered Membership.
SWJ’s team is given hands on support and training from all three directors. Their ethos of encouraging excellence through failure is a proven way to encourage creativity and productivity developing team members who are not afraid to explore possibilities; becoming more effective at solving problems and ultimately better developed technically.

We are currently working with Hill on 200 units including three concrete frames for flats and low-rise housing with a value of £15m. This project has been delivered by three SWJ team members within the given time frame.
SWJ’s pricing strategy is to give a fair price that includes all that’s needed and to then stand by it. We do not want to go back to the client to ask for extras. We are confident in the way we work and our processes that (provided it is in scope or is a reasonable adjustment) everything required within the project will be covered in our original quote. Other consultancies may quote a lower price and then add on extras throughout the project, but we feel this disadvantages the client and discourages efficiency and productivity. We are thorough in all we do and use digital construction technology to help eliminate human error, our pricing structure reflects this and if clients are looking for the cheapest price then we will not be the consultancy for them, although in all likelihood we would have saved them money in the long-run.
Structural Engineering is not about selling the dream, and we do not do this. It is our job to either establish what is possible or how a design might be achieved. This is especially true when working on basements; while we will do all we can to realise the client and architect’s vision, integrity dictates that we are quick to let clients know if something is not possible.
Our practical approach combines traditional common sense, knowledge and a hands-on approach with the benefits of modern technology. Our 3D models allow clients to explore the solution and investigate alternative design options.
We understand that trust is earnt and develops over time. To help build the foundation of trust we have worked hard to achieve accreditations such as Construction Line and ISO9001 so you can be confident we are open to evaluation and assessment and are not found lacking. SWJ try to be as transparent as possible, we’ll share drawings and options to clients to discuss our thinking. Our quotes are inclusive, we do not have hidden extras that are charged for later. We ensure we are communicative throughout our projects, tackling problems head–on and ensuring a solution is reached and communicated quickly.
